High Speed Internet???

topic posted Tue, January 29, 2008 - 3:43 PM by  megan
I'm having a hell of a time getting high speed internet hooked up at the place I rent. We're a few miles outside of Fort Bragg along Highway 20, and so far have found out that DSL isn't available, Cable is but we'd have to put in a new cable line (at an expense of $3000) because the current one isn't up to Comcast's "code," Willits Online's broadband wireless won't work, and satellite is looking iffy because of all the redwood trees on the property.

I've been going to coffeeshops with free wireless, but we really need high speed internet at home because I'm a web designer and I work from home. Can't start work until I have internet.

Just wondering if any of you have any experiences with finding broadband out here or any suggestions for where to look. I'm starting to get worried we may have to move closer to town just to be able to work. Which would suck, cuz we moved in just 3 weeks ago...

Thanks for any input! :)

That is one of the drawbacks of living out in the hills. I just moved from 1 mile north of Willits on Hwy 101 (where I had Willits Online) to six miles out a dirt road SW of Willits (where I am on dial-up at 21.6 KBPS). You have already looked at all of the options I would suggest. There is talk of something new listed on the homepage of mcn.org, but it is still in the talking stage, nothing you can sign-up for now. If you must have highspeed for your work, you best bet is either figure out how to do satelite, or move closer to town.

    Sorry,

    Liam

I actually was able to find something that may work, although it's not exactly high speed. I signed up with Verizon for EVDO, which is basically wireless broadband. However, the speeds in this area aren't great, only 2-3 times faster than dial-up. But it is portable, and as they increase their network it'll get faster. Hopefully this will work for now!

If anyone needs more info about it, let me know. I found out about it through a guy in Willits.

I'm interested, who do I talk to?

MCN has a 'higher' speed dial up. Depending on how much resolution you're willing to give up it's a roughly a few times faster than regular, and you can adjust that easily through the icon at any time. Probably not fast enough for some but a huge improvement here, and it's only a couple of bucks or so more a month. I've seen this advertised from other N. Coast companies too. Since it's a quick download and free to try the 1st month (after telling them by phone) it might help while you explore other options.

Verizon has EVDO service in this area, but only their National Plan, which is slower than regular EVDO, works here. I got my set up from 3gstore.com. It's a tiny modem (with a USB port) that I plug into a router and signal booster antennae. Everything is small because it's designed to be portable, and it's kinda cool because you can theoretically take it anywhere within their coverage area and you'll have internet. There are a lot of downsides though, and we're thinking about just getting cable TV if that will work, then using the cable modem on the cable tv line.

The problems we've discovered with EVDO from Verizon are: crappy coverage in this area, it's only about 2 - 3 times faster than dial up and doesn't seem fast enough for working online like I do; you have to sign a 1 or 2 year contract just like a cell phone; and you have to buy equipment plus pay for a monthly plan; and there's a 5GB bandwidth limit per month. I really don't know how much bandwidth I use but I'm willing to bet it's a lot, and for that reason alone we may keep looking for options. It does work though, it came activated when I bought it from 3gstore, and it's quick to get set up. There is a 30-day trial period which is really nice because we may be taking advantage of this. I just wanted to give it a try to see if it would work. With two of us online at the same time though, it's not all that much better than dial-up. :(
