Glad to find a tribe of fellow Mendo coast dwellers. I just moved outside of Fort Bragg after traveling the west for the past 6 or 7 months in search of a place that felt like home. This place is it - beautiful, conscious, and lots of redwoods to hug! I've been here about two weeks and despite the rainy season I love it already. I'm originally from Idaho so I've never lived by the ocean before. The small town vibe is awesome and I'm discovering that Cali "rednecks" are completely a different thing from Idaho "rednecks" - I much prefer the local yokels out here in Cali.
If there's any good drum circles, barter/trading circles, or other such gatherings and events, let me know. I'm hoping to get as involved in the local community as possible and meet new people since I know just a handful of folks here.
Also, I will be starting up a web & graphic design business very soon and am interested in working with local companies and organizations (I specialize in sustainable/green design and work for activist/non-profit organizations in particular).
peace, love & light

Re: Hi from a newbie!
Sun, January 27, 2008 - 4:58 AMWhen it's not raining there's often a Fri. night drum circle on Big River beach (in Mendo). You can park behind (on the cliff side) of the Presb. Church (the tall white one beside the gas station). There are paths that go down to some stairs and the beach. They usually are near a big log fairly near the stairs. Or you can park to the E of the bridge and walk up the beach, but it's longer. Sometimes there are other groups with fires down there at the same time like Christians or High Schoolers but they don't drum as far as I've seen. The fire circle seems to be mostly some locals and some kids on the road. Pretty much any instruments are welcome (if they're not too overbearing) and sometimes they have a firedancer or two, etc., ... . I went in the summer and I'm not sure if they even do it in the winter. You can park at the vista pull-out just before the brige to see if there's anything happening. -
