Mendocino County will be voting on June 3. I urge you to register to vote and educate yourselves about the measures on the ballot. One very important measure is Measure B, which will repeal Measure G that was voted into law by a large majority of people in this county not long ago. Measure B may spring from good intentions, but it will only hurt the people of our county and will be a huge step backwards in our fight against the unjust drug war.

Basically, Measure B will remove the protections Measure G offers to medical marijuana patients and set the county limits back to the state levels (6 plants/8 oz) - so 7 plants will become a felony. Supporters of Measure B think that this will help get rid of large-scale commercial growers. However, these large-scale operations are already breaking the law and the current limits. So how will changing the law have any effect on them at all? They obviously don't care about the law. Measure B will hurt legitimate medical patients and their caregivers, it won't stop commercial growing. Let's keep Mendocino county progressive, compassionate, and green! Please Vote NO on Measure B this June.

For more information, please visit: http://www.nomeasureb.org/

Here's an easy way to remember this: B is for bad, backwards, and bullshit. G is for good, green, and groovy. Vote NO on Measure B!

I just moved outside of Fort Bragg after traveling the west for the past 6 or 7 months in search of a place that felt like home. This place is it - beautiful, conscious, and lots of redwoods to hug! I've been here about two weeks and despite the rainy season I love it already. I'm originally from Idaho so I've never lived by the ocean before. The small town vibe is awesome and I'm discovering that Cali "rednecks" are completely a different thing from Idaho "rednecks" - I much prefer the local yokels out here in Cali.

If there's any good drum circles, barter/trading circles, or other such gatherings and events, let me know. I'm hoping to get as involved in the local community as possible and meet new people since I know just a handful of folks here.

Also, I will be starting up a web & graphic design business very soon and am interested in working with local companies and organizations (I specialize in sustainable/green design and work for activist/non-profit organizations in particular).

Just thought I'd put in a good word for an organization in Fort Bragg that I've been working with. They're called Noyo Food Forest and they run a learning garden next to the high school that provides organic produce to the school as well as farmer's market. They just started a new community garden near Noyo Harbor and we went to the work day for the garden this weekend. It is a great little spot and I can't wait to get some veggies planted there! The next workday is February 24th if anyone is interested, and more information on the organization can be found here: http://www.coastlocalize.org/html_pages/Noyo_home_pg.html

What follows is a repost from Noyo Food Forest about their community garden project in case anyone is interested in participating:

Last summer, Paul Katzeff, owner of Thanksgiving Coffee, offered Noyo
Food Forest the use of his fallow land next to the warehouse, located
on 19100 South Harbor Drive , Fort Bragg . Two months later, Ukiah
Natural Food Cooperative awarded Noyo Food Forest a grant to
start the Noyo Com-Unity Garden , a traditional community garden
where plots will be subleased to community members, and shared
community beds will be accessible. This project is administered by
the Noyo Food Forest , a non-profit organization, whose mission is to
cultivate a healthy local food system by providing opportunities for
education, enterprise, and community involvement.

The two obvious benefits of community gardens are the beautification
of a barren space, and a strengthened sense of community. But the
impact of a community garden can reach much further; touching on
areas of sustainable agriculture, urban revitalization, reducing
hunger, environmental concerns, generating money for low-income
neighborhoods, cultural understanding, crime reduction, education and
development of youth. The simple act of planting
a garden can create positive environmental, economic, and social
impacts on a neighborhood. Community
gardens foster cultural understanding and an awareness of the
environment around us. They transform empty lots into green, living
spaces, which are collaborative projects created by members of the
community. This encourages social cohesiveness, which is becoming a
lost art in our society. Residents share in both the maintenance and
rewards of the garden. One of the main goals of community gardening
is to work together or next to each other in relative harmony.

The purpose of Noyo Food Forest is to provide access to land, water
and general garden administration. We provide liability insurance,
infrastructure, tools and equipment. The care and maintenance of
the garden is the collective responsibility of the Noyo Com-Unity
gardeners.

Plots will be assigned on a first come first served basis. Only
organic methods will be used in the Com-Unity Gardens . Any
pesticides or herbicides and fertilizers must be approved and
organic. This aids in the plan to allow Com-Unity Gardeners the
option to sell their produce at Noyo Food Forest 's produce stand at
the Farmer's Market.

We are inspired by the basic permaculture principles: looking at a
whole system or problem, seeing connections between key elements, or
parts, observing how the parts relate, and planning to mend sick
systems by applying ideas learned from long-term sustainable working
systems. Modern permaculture is a system design tool.

It recognizes that the Earth is the source of all life. It supports
and helps to change to ways of living that are not harming ourselves
or the planet. It develops healthy societies, and ensures that the
Earth's limited resources are utilized in ways that are equitable and
wise by limiting our consumption. Paul Katzeff has a worm farm
(Vermacomposting) located by Thanksgiving Coffee Warehouse, where all
of the scraps from his house and restaurant are digested into
wonderful compost for their apple orchard. We plan to follow his
lead in this innovative approach to better use of the waste we make.

Noyo Food Forest Com-Unity Gardens and the Learning Garden will
sponsor workdays, ROP classes; and low cost workshops. Com-Unity
Gardeners are encouraged to attend as many as they can. Workshops
and public forums, where people have an opportunity to contribute
ideas and concerns about improvements and physical changes in their
neighborhoods, will strengthen our ability to work together as a
whole. Noyo Food Forest believes in asking questions of the people
from the community to discover their needs and aspirations. We feel
it is important to work with individuals and communities to create a
vision around the places that they view as important to community
life and to their daily experience. Noyo Food Forest feels that
cultural unity is important to the cohesiveness of our community. In
our organization the language is not a barrier. We provide useful
information to the community in both English and Spanish.

In December 9, 2007 we had our first workday to remove brush and
debris from this 6,000 square foot parcel. Fourteen ambitious
volunteers showed up to clear our canvas. Underneath we found gold;
deliciously black topsoil that is just awaiting our seeds and love.

Workdays will be on Sundays at 1:00 pm, weather permitting. Don't
forget to put them on your calendar!

February 10 and 24

March 9 and 23

April 6 and 20

The first and most important tasks are:

Build a fence (Feb 10)

Sheet mulch and build compost (Feb 10)

Make seed balls for a cover crop (Feb 10)

Build a tool shed/meeting space (Feb 24)

Fence Building
If any of you that have extra 8' wooden posts, other lumber, bags of
cement, or rolls of 6-1/2' tall deer fencing lying around we could
use them! Let us know what you have so that we can order the
materials as soon as possible. We plan to rent an auger to dig the
post holes. If you can bring tools and know how to build a fence, we
would be gracious for your help!

Sheet composting
We will need a lot of raw materials delivered to the site on Sunday
to get started. Noyo Food Forest asks that you bring compost
materials including:

Nitrogen (manure, kitchen waste, etc)
Carbon (weed-free straw, leaves, etc)
Lots of cardboard (remember we are working with 6,000 sq ft)

Please arrange with Katrina Aschenbrenner (Noyo Com-Unity Garden
Coordinator), if you have large loads to deliver or if you need us to
pick something up.

Cover Crop Seed Balls
Virginia O'Rourke will be on site to demonstrate how to make Cover
Crop Seed Balls. We will have the materials available for
all "dreamers" to make while we plan the design of our garden.

Shed Building
We will have the plans drawn up for the shed by February 24. We have
a carpenter ready to donate his time to build it. Any other
carpenters are welcome to join our team. Please let us know if you
would like to help with this project or have any "lightly used"
materials to donate.

Don't miss this opportunity to participate in the larger vision of
the Noyo Com-Unity Gardens ! We also envision growing food for the
Food Bank and Homeless Shelters, along with encouraging people with
gardens at home to do the same. Learn new methods in organic and
sustainable gardening, permaculture, Vermacomposting. Meet new
friends in the community. Be a part of this local movement which is
open to everybody. Get involved!

`Cuz Everybody's Gotta Eat!!

I'm not fixed on what this will become...for now, I'm just moving forward and seeing what happens!

Last summer, I quit my soul-killing job, took a few months off and then bought myself a vintage travel trailer, with the intention of traveling through northern California, looking for a new place to live. I had been living in Mountain View and was sick of the whole Silicon Valley scene.

I have fallen madly in love with Point Arena and am eager to find a place to rent up there, which will be tricky since it's such a small town.

In the meantime, I have rented a lovely place in Cazadero (in Sonoma County), right on the creek, which I am enjoying immensely.
I would be interested in something small, a cabin, maybe a room in a quiet household. I would likely be out hiking or working or writing and reading so a "party" environ would not be great.
Janie Rezner's guest on KZYX, Women's Voices June 12, 7 pm. will be Camila Martinez, Curandera (practitioner of traditional native Mexican medicine) ethonobotanist, world traveler, educator, field researcher on traditional native herbal and spiritual healing.

Camila is the first western woman to receive a graduate degree in both Ayurvedic medicine and Tibetan Medicine. She had the great fortune of studying with Tibet's most revered lady, Dr. Lobsang Dolma. She apprenticed with Dona Julieta, a Mazatec curandera and shamaness, in Oaxaca, Mexico for nineteen years, and for two years with Auntie Margaret Machado, on the Big Island of Hawaii. She holds a women's lineage.

Camila has taught Traditional Native Medicine at U. C. Santa Cruz and lectured extensively on this topic internationally. For the past six years Camila has been spending her time in Quintana Roo, on the Yucatan peninsula that borders on Belize, working with the Mayan people and directing the Maya Ecological Literacy Program in the Peten Jungle.

She has also sponsored community direct action for the earth, and gatherings on ecology, sustainability, genetic engineering of corn and seeds, social justice, to help inform these impoverished native people, who literally are being dumped on with genetically engineered corn from the U.S. She talks with the elders about the dangers they face from the Plan Pueblo Panama and the collusion of the Mexican government with American business interests. Her next phase of this work is making a movie in Spanish on the problems of genetic engineering of corn and other foods, geared for indigenous farmers.

She brings us a glimpse and an opportunity for connection into another world. There will be time for call-ins.

Can be heard live at www.kzyx.org 7 pm. Pacific Time

for all of you who dont know about lateef him and lyrics born are latyrx and you have probably heard him with blackalicous on veryious songs. here is a bio for lateef and tha cheef's newer album

In these days of trouble, Lateef & The Chief's Maroons : Ambush, offers soul power against soul-crushing powers, hard music for hard times.

The Maroons are Lateef the Truth Speaker, one-half of the critically acclaimed Latyrx, and Chief Xcel, Blackalicious' musical mastermind. After years of working together in the studio and on the road, Ambush is the first fruit of their extended collaboration. From the opening title track through the last track, "365," they turn battle rhymes into statements of peace, and celebrate survival, solidarity, and the sistas. For them, "Don't stop" is both a command and an affirmation.

They took their name from the renegade 18th century African societies that erupted in the slave colonies of the New World from Brazil to Jamaica to Surinam to Florida. "The Maroons are still inspiring," Xcel says. "They were Africans who refused to be enslaved. To us as black men trying to be responsible and accountable, they represent freedom and independence."

Lateef adds, "That's been our whole approach to music and the industry and to ourselves-to create without being watered down by what society or popular culture dictates, to be to able to speak our minds from a place of our own integrity."

The two met in 1992 in the basement studios of KDVS-FM at the University of California at Davis, and immediately bonded over hip-hop records. Xcel came from Sacramento, born to parents who had been involved in the black power movement. Lateef was raised in East Oakland, where his father was security detail for the Black Panthers and his mother was a Panther medic and a roommate and political associate of Angela Davis.

Linking with the Gift of Gab, Lyrics Born, and DJ Shadow, Lateef and the Chief formed the SoleSides collective and released a series of classic singles and albums. Lateef debuted in 1996 on a now-prized limited-edition single with the DJ Shadow-produced cuts, "The Wreckoning" and "Latyrx". The following year, SoleSides flowered into Quannum, and the two recorded "Jada's Vengeance" for the Quannum Spectrum album.

After Blackalicious' Nia dropped, the two began planning the Maroons record. At the same time, Lateef joined Blackalicious for the recording of Blazing Arrow and on their subsequent world tours. He cut the road rage comedy, "Mashing On The Motorway", for DJ Shadow's The Private Press. He recorded a cover of Fela Anikulapo-Kuti's "Kalakuta Show" with Mixmaster Mike and the Gift of Gab for the tribute album, Red Hot + Riot!, and is now being featured on Fatboy Slim's new album Palookaville in two star-making turns.

For Ambush, Lateef says, "We wanted the record to be hard, to reflect where we're from and how we approach this. At the same time we also wanted to show some breadth and width as artists and songwriters."

All that is amply demonstrated on the mini-album's nine songs. "Don't Stop" is a dedication to a beautiful woman with a hardened heart, giving the back-story to Latyrx's concert fave, "Lady Don't Tek No". "Matter of Time" is a classic Quannum-style ear-burner, while "Best of Me" and "Beautiful You" pair Lateef with the Gift of Gab for hot slices of elevation. "Best of Me (Bonus Beat)" is a concise marvel of heart-stopping beats and signifying wordplay. On "If", Lateef asks cutting questions about Bush's war and the current election-year state of emergency.

"365" and the title track lay out the Maroons' strategy-Afrodiasporic beats that effortlessly bring together jazz, samba, charanga, dub and funk through hip-hop and fluid whirlwind rhymes rippling with metaphors and ideas. The cumulative effect is something like the spine-shattering impact of a close encounter with Lester Hayes, the Oakland Raiders' legendary safety.

Choosing to innovate while staying true to their history, the Maroons are reviving an aesthetic that inspired the Harlem Renaissance, the Black Arts Movement, and the filmmakers, musicians, and writers of the hip-hop explosion of the late 80s and early 90s-making art that connects to the people's experiences and emotions.

"Our job is making people come together," Lateef says. "We're kind of like servants for the people. People use what we do in their own daily lives to help them get through. So we can't stop now."

KNYO, Fort Bragg's new and only community radio station is now on the air at 107.7 FM. We are broadcasting 24 hours a day, right now we are mainly automated but live a lot of the daylight hours, we are playing rock and roll, world music, hip-hop, punk, political commentary, old school radio theater shows and more. Especially check out my show Samsara featuring hip-hop, punk, world and eclectic bizarre alternative music every night at 10pm. Today (Sun. May 14) please checkout the World Music Block of music from 12-3pm and the REggae Block from 3-5 pm and the Lora Flanders show (political commentary) from 5-6pm.

We are a microradio station, a new class of radio license issued by the FCC in only the last 5 years, what it means that small commmunity nonprofit groups can set up stations with only a few thousand dollars cash outlays (setting up a normal station costs $100,000s or more), but that we only broadcast over a small geographical area compared to regular full power radio. Our range definitely includes the Fort Bragg and Caspar areas, and folks as far south as Mendocino and north as Cleone should try and tune us in, but receptions may be difficult. However we plan to make some chagnes in our boradcasting setup this afternoon, and more in the ensuing days, that will hopefully expand our reception area, and in the future we will offer either classes on making antennas or antennas for sale that will make it easier for people far out in the sticks or in other marginal receptions areas to pick us up. Having an antenna which is just the right length in relation to the frequency (in our case 107.7FM) makes it much easier to pick a particular station up. We will make more info on this avaialbe in the future!

For now we welcome all feed back at 964-6968 or knyovolunteer@yahoo.com and any donations to:

I'm still new to this tribe thing, but I am a nice person, and have the best buses in the world. I use school buses to haul medical and material aid to some of poorest places in the world (Haiti, Chiapas Mexico, El Salvador, and Nicaragua) and buy and sell them, and bus parts to support the project. I take every penny i make and convert it directly back into school supplies, medical supplies, tools, generators, and whatever the folks ask for specifically, (no junk, no used clothing) and then drive it down in person (except Haiti, that's $6000 thru the Panama Canal. Ouch)

I sell buses to folks that are 100% functioning in every way when they leave my hands, and also give any body thirty days to return the bus if unsatisfied. Nobody ever has, but it's OK, I'll just sell it to somebody else. you will also get a lifetime of free advice before and after you get a bus from me, I'm avaiable 7 days a week within reason, and after having dismantled 14 buses, and owning about 60,I am pretty knowledgable about their inner workings. Also got lots of good used bus parts, at the best price anywhere in the US. Ii have no overhead, just my Mazda mini truck and some tools.

Topics vary from wildcrafting, plant id to medicine making, ritual and natural self care! This is a call out to any herbalistas who might want to mentor once a month in a circle setting. Also to any girls in that age range who would be intrested-- the project is completley free and they can join with friends. Also any healers that wouldnt have time to commit each month could do a one time class with the girls, topics can be a wide range so inquire if you think your connected to this in any way!
ABC's of Anarchism:
A Mendocino Free Skool cooperative seminar

Anarchy! Anarchism! Over the last couple hundred years since these words came into commun use as both a pejorative and a utopian ideology, they have represented very different things to different people: bomb-throwing, president-assassinating, founding socialistic communes, building worldwide industrial unions, fighting the fascists in Spain -- and more recently anarchists have advocated such disparate actions as smashing corporate shop windows during protest marches, and cooperatively planting urban community gardens. In this 5 session class and discussion group facilitated by Dan Young, we will explore what the words anarchy and anarchism have meant in history, contemporary society, and most importantly to the participants. Possible topics focused on could include: The Industrial Workers of the World, the Spanish Civil War, the (anti)globalization movement, anarcho-primtivism or green anarchy, the history of May Day and much more...The class will meet on 5 Monday nights April 3-May 1, from 7-8:30pm. The first class will meet at The Grind eating area at College of the Redwoods, and future locations will be decided by class participants. Readings for the course and locations for classes will be available online at www.noyoradio.com/anarchy.html.

the coast has always been a place of transformation for me....the place I go to heal. I started coming there in my twenties and here I am still going there for what I call 'medicine days.' maybe it's the sanity and simplicity of the big trees and water and herbs....so raw...the beauty. the color is calming and rich. I think I have had stronger experiences that mean more there on the coast...and I have lived plenty of different places in my life. do any of you feel this way?
yesterday evening I flew up towards a grandfather redwood tree on rt. 20 going towards willits in my car trying to avoid a raccoon....and I kind of left my body. Friends that night hours later said I didn't know where I was...and how I survived intact--me and my car--is beyond my comprehension. I do remember watching from the other side of the road...and imagining a plastic wreath of flowers on the tree. I still am in tears and feel really strange....like it was all a dream. but maybe it's the opposite....this is all a dream and mendo life is reality. people have been coming to and leaving the mendo coast for so long over and over again. I always see folks I love...even after years have passed and I always miss folks that are gone. it's like everyone leaves powerful imprints....you feel them wherever you go. I would really appreciate if anyone there feels any of this...please comment. it would do me good to talk about it. thanx. -dreamtree/dreama
